how to look after your wedding bouquet for preservation

Your wedding day is a whirlwind, and while you're busy making memories, your flowers are hard at work looking gorgeous! If you're planning to have your bouquet preserved into a forever keepsake, keeping those flowers fresh on the big day (and during transit) is the secret to getting the best possible result.

Here are my top tips for keeping your flowers in tip-top shape before they make their journey to my studio:

 

Keep Them Hydrated

It might seem like a given, but keep your bouquet in water whenever you aren't actively holding it. Once your main photos are finished, get those stems back into a vase! When you sit down for your wedding breakfast, pop your bouquet in a vase on your table (it doubles as lovely decor and keeps your flowers drinking)!

 

Beat the Heat

Hydration is especially crucial if you’re getting married on a warm summer day. Flowers exposed to higher temperatures tend to wilt much faster, so keeping them cool and hydrated will buy them valuable time.

 

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Keep your bouquet out of direct, harsh sunlight whenever possible. Strong sun warms up the delicate petals, causing them to dry out, discolour, or drop prematurely. Shade is your bouquet's best friend!

 

Prepping Your Flowers for Transit

When it's time to pack up your bouquet and send it off to me, a little prep work goes a long way in protecting your stems on their journey.

Trim the Stems: Cut 1–2cm off the bottom of the stems at an angle right before packing. This opens up the stems so they can absorb moisture during travel.

Wrap with Damp Kitchen Roll: Wrap the ends of the stems in damp (not dripping wet!) kitchen paper.

Seal with Foil: Cover the damp paper with tin foil to lock in the moisture during transit. Avoid using plastic wrap here, as it can trap heat and create bacteria!

By following these simple steps, you're giving your flowers the absolute best chance to arrive fresh, vibrant, and ready for their transformation!
